Depression - part II

 Dear readers,

I hope you’ve found something interesting in my previous post – so today I’ll continue the topic of depression, but this time from a little bit ‘chemical’ way and more specifically about risk factors and treatment of depression. As I wrote in the previous post, everybody can suffer from depression, but scientists have distinguish several reason. We can mention some of them:

  • Biochemistry - differences in certain chemicals in the brain can contribute to the development of symptoms
  • Genetics – in many diagnosed cases, depression was present in the ancestors
  • Personality - people with low self-esteem, that get stressed easily, or that are generally pessimistic appear to be at greater risk of depression
  • Environmental factors - continued exposure to violence, neglect, abuse or poverty can make some people more susceptible to depression.

But how to treat depression. Simply put, depression is one of the most treatable mental illnesses. The most popular treatment is administering medications, that can relieve stress, combat sleep disorders and improve the general well-being of the patient. Another very popular method is psychotherapy. Psychotherapy  is sometimes used alone for treatment of mild depression, but with advanced disease it is used together with medications. The least popular method is Electroconvulsive Therapy. This type of treatment is used for patients with severe major depression who have not responded to other treatments. It involves a short electrical brain stimulation while the patient is under anesthesia. That’s all for today. I hope this post was interesting for you. See you soon <3
